Well, it’s that time of year. The time when you don’t dare leave your car unlocked for fear you will be “gifted” with someone’s excess zucchini! (Though personally I have trouble believing that there is such thing as too much zucchini. They go well with so many flavours and are a breeze to freeze, either grated or sliced. I don’t even bother blanching the sliced zucchini, though experts recommend a minute’s worth.) After the monster zucchini you received the last couple weeks, we have stuck to beautiful small ones in this week’s order. But there are still some monsters around. If you would like to receive one, just let us know. There is no extra charge.
Cucumbers are coming on strong too, and we have an abundance. If you would like pickling quantities, let us know. (There will be an extra charge for these.) We also have beans and peas available in preserving quantities for $3 a pail (free if you come to pick them yourselves). Please let us know if you would like some.
This week’s order contains the first swiss chard we have sent in quite some time, along with kale. You may be relived to know that the lettuce is finished for a while! We are hoping for a fall crop to give you a few final salads before winter though.
Otherwise, this week’s order looks quite similar to last week’s: potatoes, beets, carrots, bunching onions, shelling peas, edible pod peas, string beans, broad beans, zucchini, cucumbers, kale, chard, basil, parsely, sage, and hot hungarian wax peppers.
Finally, a reminder that our summer beach party and pot luck is happening this Saturday (check the coming events page for more details). If the heat is getting to you, this is the perfect opportunity to cool off and enjoy some wonderful company and fabulous food.
MONSTER ‘veggie dreams’ as well!! The monster zucchini WATCHES me from it’s perch whenever I’m in the kitchen. She will meet her demise SOON!
Thank you so much for the wonderful photos! They are a valuable tool for defining each veg. But to stand in the middle of the gardens & take in the WHOLE expanse is overwhelming!! love it J
