Hello Corn, Goodbye Peas

Fall must truly be on its way! We have discovered that the earliest corn is ripe and of course, you will be sharing in the wealth this week, and hopefully for weeks to come!! Tomatoes are also coming along well, and it looks like we’ve got an abundant enough crop that we will have bulk tomatoes available for sale ($1/pound). Please let us know if you would like any, and spread the word to anyone you know who might be interested.
Unfortunately, the season also means that the peas are on their last legs. This will be the last week for shelling peas, and possible also for the edible pod peas.
Root veggies, of course, continue to be part of the orders. Enjoy your carrots, potatoes (which are getting to be quite large!), onions, and beets.
The other usual suspects are also in this week’s orders: green beans, greens (swiss chard and kale), cucumbers, herbs (basil and parsley), celery, hot hungarian wax peppers, and zucchini.
Speaking of zucchini, we do still have monster zucchini available to anyone who would like one (no extra charge). Just let us know and we’ll be glad to send one (or more)!
One delicious way to enjoy the zucchini is in zucchini brownies. Here’s my recipe:
1 cup flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/3 cup cocoa
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt.
Combine in large bowl. Stir in
2-3 cups grated zucchini.
In a separate bowl, combine:
1 egg
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1/2 cup oil
1 tsp vanilla.
Beat with fork, then stir into zucchini mixture. Spread evenly into greased 9 by 13 inch pan. Sprinkle 1/2 cup chocolate chips and 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional) on top of batter. Bake at 350 for 35-40 minutes, until toothpick inserted in centre comes out clean.

  1. OH yum yum! I LOVE new young corn, no cooking, just eat right off the cob. It is SO SWEET! Course I will also add it to the chili that I plan on making a big batch of for winter meals. Tomatoes are a staple for anyone canning. I much prefer them to ‘store bought’. Thank you so much for this wonderful trip thro’ the vegie field!
